Former New York City mayor and businessman Michael Bloomberg started his namesake philanthropy organization in 2006. After leaving City Hall, Bloomberg began focusing more on philanthropy, which has been a top priority throughout his career. Bloomberg Philanthropies is centered on five key areas: public health, arts and culture, the environment, education and government innovation. These are the five areas that Bloomberg and his team are the most passionate about and also where they believe they can achieve the “greatest good.” To date, Bloomberg has donated $8 billion to a variety of causes and organizations. In 2018, Bloomberg Philanthropies donated a total of $767 million. The organization invested that money into 510 cities in 129 countries around the world.
