Best Off-Broadway Theater Winner

The Public Theater has spent more than six decades building a nonprofit theater program around the idea that art and culture belong to everyone. Founded through the vision of Joe Papp, the organization presents new plays and musicals at its Astor Place home while also producing Free Shakespeare in the Park at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. Its programming extends to the Mobile Unit, which tours throughout New York City’s five boroughs, Public Works and Joe’s Pub. The Public has also been associated with major productions, including the 1967 premiere of HAIR and the development of Hamilton. Beyond performances, the organization supports community relationships and free theater access across the city.
