Best Business Improvement District Winner
Lower Manhattan is a neighborhood, a business district and a destination all at once, and the Alliance for Downtown New York works across all three. Founded in 1995, the organization manages the Downtown-Lower Manhattan Business Improvement District, covering an area that runs roughly from City Hall to the Battery and from the East River to West Street. Its work includes supplemental sanitation and public safety, streetscape improvements, economic development, research, business resources, tourism programs, events and free public Wi-Fi. The Alliance also operates the Downtown Connection bus and manages public-space initiatives throughout the district. With responsibilities ranging from keeping streets clean to supporting the local economy, the organization plays an unusually broad role in the daily life and long-term development of Lower Manhattan.
