In 1984, a local parent founded the Greenwich Village Little League to give children the opportunity to play an organized team sport. According to the organization, nearly 900 girls and boys played baseball and softball on 65 different teams last spring. The league plays and trains all year round but the main season takes place from April to June. The all-volunteer organization consists of a board of directors, team coordinators, team managers, coaches safety officers and umpires. Spring registration for the Greenwich Village Little League begins on Sunday, Dec. 1. Kids are placed on teams in the t-ball, juniors and minors divisions based on requests to play with former teammates and friends or kids from the same school. Kids in the more competitive majors, juniors and seniors baseball divisions, have the chance to try out and are drafted based on ability.
