Hunter College Elementary School traces its history to 1870, when it began as the Hunter College Model School, and was restructured in 1941 as a school for intellectually talented and gifted students. Today, HCES serves kindergarten through sixth grade as part of the Hunter College Campus Schools, which are publicly funded and tuition-free. The school describes its curriculum as rigorous, with a core program integrated with specialty offerings that broaden students’ educational experiences. Its stated priorities include intellectual, critical and creative thinking, along with social responsibility, leadership, civility and ethical behavior. Families also participate through the PTA and volunteer programs. HCES combines a long history in gifted education with a contemporary elementary-school program.
